Wolfeboro Details

Directions:

It is situated between Arnold and Bear Valley on Route 4, in Stanislaus National Forest and is 168 miles from Berkeley.

From Stockton, head east on Route 4 for about 88 miles.

Traveling east on Highway 4, Angels Camp is about an hour from camp. Once you get to Arnold you are 18 miles from turn off into camp. When you see the sign for Big Meadows Campground you want to start slowing down, as the turnoff is about 0.25 miles ahead on your right. It is a small service road and easy to miss. The sign for this road changes each year; some years it is a paper plate nailed to a post.

(If you get to Bear Valley you have gone too far.)

After turning onto the service road, cross (that is, drive through) the stream and park in the dirt parking lot beyond.

From the parking lot, the scouts hike together as a Troop the 2 miles down the hill into camp.

Collecting scouts at the end of Camp.

The scouts will hike up the hill to the parking lot by about 10:30 am on the Saturday at the end of camp. However, parents are welcome to hike down either on the Saturday morning, or on the Friday night for dinner and the camp fire ceremony, including the introduction of scouts who have been voted by their troop to join the Wolfeboro Pioneers. Let the scoutmaster know in advance if you’d like to join the Troop on the Friday night.

For scouts staying two weeks at camp.

On the Saturday between T24’s two weeks at camp, the troop usually hikes up the river with their tents to spend the night away from camp. Scouts staying only one week are welcome to join in.

Wolfeboro Handbook

The handbook contains a lot of information, including the refund policy. Below are a few highlights.

Contacting camp

In case of emergency (p6): Contact the Council Service Center at (925) 674-6100. They will relay a message to camp. There is only one phone at camp and it is reserved for emergency use only. Scouts will be encouraged not to phone home. However, they love to get letters and care packages. Parents need to send this the Thursday before camp starts as USPS is the only show in town – no FedEx/UPS. The address is

Packing for T24 at Wolfeboro.

T24 scouts are expected to backpack most of their gear down the hill from the parking lot, into camp. Some gear can go in a duffel bag which goes on the camp truck. Coming back up the hill at the end of the week, more gear tends to find it’s way into the duffel bag on the truck, but you still have to carry your backpack back up to the parking lot.

There is a packing list on page 20 of the 2015 handbook of things to take, and things NOT to take. Here are a few extra comments:

  • Scouts often like to bring a camp chair to use around the Troop’s firepit.
  • Keeping warm at night: Take a synthetic sleeping bag, which will still give warmth even if it is wet. Take a good mattress, maybe an extra blanket and definitely a cozy hat to sleep in.
  • Keeping cool during the day: Sunscreen, a brimmed hat, and a water bottle are a must. There is water at camp, but not in every program area.
  • You’d be unwise to forget bug repellent of the DEET kind. Head nets are also useful.
  • First-time scouts, usually go on the Sourdough overnight trip. You’ll be sleeping under the stars in your sleeping bag so take an extra small tarp (so you don’t have to take your tent down to borrow its tarp.)
  • Pack a copy of your medical form/talent release form in your personal first aid kit.
  • Parents need to fill out a Firearms Permission Slip book (also in the handbook). Even if you don’t do one of the shooting merit badges, T24 will have a troop shoot, maybe against another troop.
  • Money: The scouts will need money for merit badge supplies. There is also a store with candy. Unless you are doing one of the more expensive merit badges, like shooting, between $10-20 should be ample.
  • Do not bring electronics – iPods, music players etc.
